Vinyl vs fiber cement siding in New England weather

Both work here. They fail differently, cost differently, and suit different houses. A straight comparison from crews who install both.

We install both, so we have no reason to push you toward either. Here is what actually separates them once they are on a wall in Massachusetts.

Vinyl

Modern vinyl is a long way from the thin stuff people remember from the eighties. Insulated panels have real backing, colour is through the whole thickness, and the profiles are much better.

  • Lowest installed cost of the durable options.
  • No painting, ever. Wash it occasionally and that is the maintenance.
  • Expands and contracts significantly, which is why it must be hung loose rather than nailed tight.
  • Can warp near a reflective window or a grill left too close.
  • Impact damage in a hailstorm means replacing panels, not repairing them.

Fiber cement

Cement, sand and cellulose pressed into board. It looks much closer to painted wood, which matters on a colonial or a shingle-style house where vinyl can read as wrong.

  • Holds paint for a long time and takes repainting well when you want a colour change.
  • Does not warp, and handles impact far better than vinyl.
  • Non-combustible, which some homeowners care about a great deal.
  • Heavy and slow to install, which is most of the cost difference.
  • Cut edges must be sealed properly or the board wicks water. This is where bad installs give themselves away.

What matters more than the material

Both products fail the same way when installed badly: water gets behind them and stays there. The weather barrier, the flashing at every window and door, the detail where the wall meets the roof. Get those right and either material lasts. Get them wrong and the best siding on the market will not save the sheathing.

Ask any siding contractor what happens to the sheathing when the old siding comes off. If the answer is not a plan for inspecting and replacing what is rotten, keep looking.

Our rough guidance

If the priority is value and low maintenance, insulated vinyl is a genuinely good product now. If the house has architectural character worth respecting, or you want the option to repaint, fiber cement is worth the extra. Cedar remains the right answer on some homes, and we will say so when it is.
